Killaspugbrone Church dates back to the 12th century, courtesy of the Killaspugbrone Preservation Society there is a well maintained panel which details its connections to St. Patrick. To reach this beautiful destination you turn right just past the 'Strandhill Surf School' shop instead of left along the shore which is the usual way to walk, you head along the dunes and cross the end of the airport runway, and then follow the path to the ruin.
Coney Island is located on the northern side of Strandhill; it is believed this small place gave its name to the island off New York. At low tide it is possible to cross to the island following the 14 pillars erected in 1845 to prevent islanders drowning as they crossed to the mainland. St. Patrick visited the island and his Wishing Chair is still to be seen, a glacial boulder on the northwest corner. Sit onits ledge and you may have a wish but only once a year.
Carrowmore represents the largest grouping of megalithics monuments in Ireland and immense Neolithic burial ground where once there may have been more than a hundred tombs. It is an interesting look into the local history of the high kings of Connacht and teh Queen of Connacht Queen Maeve
